St Michael’s Abbey, Farnborough
the home of the liturgical movement in England and Wales
through the academic current created by
DD Cabrol, Férotin, Gougaud and Villecourt

The French monks at Farnborough have made a lasting contribution to Liturgical studies and the Liturgical Movement. In particular, we can mention:

Dom Lambert Beauduin OSB, (1873-1960) (photo below left) came to England in 1915 to preach a retreat at Farnborough Abbey. Beauduin’s  retreat notes of 1915 show his appreciation of Edmund Bishop.

Abbot Fernand Cabrol (1855-1937), formerly prior of the French Abbey of Saint Pierre de Solesmes, had dreamed of a monastic foundation dedicated to liturgical studies, realised at last at Farnborough Abbey,

Dictionnaire d’Archéologie Chrétienne et de la Liturgie.

Other monks of the house but not buried here are:

Dom André Wilmart (1876- 1941)

Dom Henri LeClercq (1869-1929) Paléographie Musicale 1889ff.

Since 1948, the Abbey has been part of the Subiaco Congregation and Dom Cabrol’s dream of a monastic foundation dedicated to liturgical studies is today lived here.

There is an appeal for funds to build a Monastic Education Centre to house an educational apostolate at the abbey.
